This lecture will help you find the right words to make you more understandable, memorable, and moving - or in other words, more convincing.
Through a series of simple dos and don'ts, we will learn:
- Adapting our words to the situation and our specific position. Becoming more convincing from the get-go.
- Articulating opposing ideas without giving them too much power.
- Avoiding semantical traps.
- Using words to steer the discussion our way.
- Identifying manipulative choice of words (as often reflected in politics and the media). Protecting ourselves against such tricks.
Throughout the lecture, we will draw upon the latest in linguistics, cognitive science, and psychology. We will demonstrate excellent language use by turning to some of the best debate speeches in the world. Lastly, we will practice the skills learned on heated discussion topics.
